Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to permanently reduce or eliminate unwanted body and facial hair. The treatment uses laser technology to target hair follicles and inhibit their ability to grow hair, offering a long-term solution compared to traditional hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, or plucking.
How It Works
Laser Technology:
- Light Absorption: The procedure uses concentrated beams of light, usually in the form of a laser, to target the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicles.
- Thermal Energy: The light energy is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle and impairs its ability to produce hair.
- Selective Photothermolysis: This is a principle where the laser’s wavelength is selectively absorbed by the pigment in the hair, minimizing damage to the surrounding skin.
Hair Growth Cycles:
- Anagen Phase: Laser hair removal is most effective during the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, where the hair is actively growing and attached to the follicle.
- Multiple Sessions: Because not all hairs are in the same growth phase at the same time, multiple sessions are typically required to target hairs during their anagen phase for optimal results.
The Diode Laser is widely regarded as one of the best options for hair removal due to its effectiveness, versatility, and safety profile. It balances efficiency and comfort, making it suitable for a wide range of patients and hair types. Its ability to treat larger areas quickly and its effectiveness on coarse hair contribute to its popularity in the field of laser hair removal. Here’s why it’s often preferred:
1. Effective for a Range of Skin Types
- Wavelength: The diode laser operates at a wavelength of approximately 810 nm, which is effective for targeting melanin in hair follicles while minimizing damage to surrounding skin.
- Versatility: This wavelength penetrates deeper into the skin, making it suitable for a variety of skin types, including medium to dark skin tones. It effectively targets hair follicles at different depths.
2. Safety and Comfort
- Lower Risk of Hyperpigmentation: Compared to some other lasers, the diode laser has a lower risk of causing hyperpigmentation, making it a safer choice for darker skin tones.
- Cooling Mechanisms: Many diode laser devices are equipped with built-in cooling systems to protect the skin and reduce discomfort during the treatment.
3. Efficient Hair Removal
- Speed and Precision: Diode lasers can treat larger areas quickly because they can cover multiple hair follicles with each pulse. This makes them efficient for treating large areas like the back or legs.
- Effective on Coarser Hair: The diode laser is particularly effective on coarse, thick hair, making it a preferred choice for individuals with darker and denser hair.
4. Long-Term Results
- Permanent Hair Reduction: Diode lasers provide long-lasting results with significant hair reduction, often requiring fewer sessions compared to other methods.
- Multiple Treatments: While multiple sessions are needed for optimal results, the diode laser’s efficacy means that patients can achieve satisfactory hair reduction more quickly.
5. Comfortable Treatment
- Reduced Pain: The diode laser is generally well-tolerated by most patients, with many reporting minimal discomfort during and after the procedure.
- Adaptability: The laser’s settings can be adjusted based on the specific needs of the patient, including the skin type, hair color, and treatment area, to ensure the most comfortable experience.
6. Versatility in Application
- Body and Face: Diode lasers are suitable for treating various areas, including the face, underarms, legs, back, chest, and more.
- Customizable: The technology allows for customizable settings to adapt to different hair types and skin conditions.
How the treatment is carried out
At Derma Solution, we use new, efficient and safe technology for permanent hair removal.
The laser works by the hair shaft absorbing the light from the laser, which is converted into heat. The heat is conducted through the hair and down into the hair follicle, where this will be permanently destroyed and reduce hair growth.
- The day before your treatment, shave the area to be treated.
- Do not pluck, wax or bleach the hair for 4 weeks before a laser treatment, as this will impair the effect of the treatment. In the periods between treatments, only scrapers may also be used.
- It is crucial that you have not been exposed to the sun or solarium for the last 4 weeks before the treatment, as it increases the risk of side effects such as combustion. For the same reason, do not use self-tanner for 2 weeks before permanent hair removal.
- Before starting the treatment, put on goggles so that the laser light does not damage your eyes.
The treatment itself is associated with mild to moderate pain, which can vary depending on the area being treated. The shot of the laser will feel like a hot, short-lived shock to the skin, which, however, diminishes rapidly again. The laser’s built-in cooling system helps to minimize discomfort during treatment.
Treatment Protocol
- Sessions: Typically, 6-8 sessions are needed for effective hair reduction, with sessions spaced 4-8 weeks apart depending on the area being treated and the hair growth cycle.
- Maintenance: Periodic maintenance treatments may be necessary to address any remaining hair and maintain results.

Frequently Asked Questions
You will likely see the results immediately after treatment. The results vary from patient to patient. The color and thickness of your hair, area treated, type of laser used, and color of your skin all affect the results. You can expect a 10% to 25% reduction in hair after the first treatment.
To remove the hair, most patients need 2 to 6 laser treatments. After finishing the treatments, most patients do not see any hair on the treated skin for several months or even years. When the hair regrows, there tends to be less of it. The hairs also tend to be finer and lighter in color.
Most patients remain hair free for months or even years. When some of the hair regrows, it will likely be less noticeable. To keep the area free of hair, a patient may need maintenance laser treatments.
The most common side effects are minor and last 1 to 3 days. These side effects include:
- Discomfort
- Swelling
- Redness
Other possible side effects are rare when laser hair removal is performed by a dermatologist or under the dermatologist’s direct supervision. Other possible side effects include:
- Blistering
- Herpes simplex (cold sores) outbreaks
- Infections
- Scarring
- Skin lightening or darkening
In time, skin color tends to return to normal. Some changes to skin color, however, are permanent. This is why seeing a medical doctor who is skilled in laser treatments and has in-depth knowledge of the skin is so important.
It is also important to follow your dermatologist’s instructions. Following both the before-treatment instructions and after-treatment instructions will greatly reduce your risk of side effects.
This varies from patient to patient. Removing hair often requires a series of laser treatments. Most patients can have laser hair removal once every 4 to 6 weeks. Your dermatologist will tell you when it is safe to have another treatment.
Most patients see some hair regrowth. Your dermatologist can tell you when you can safely have laser treatments to maintain the results.
To avoid possible side effects, all patients need to protect their skin from the sun. After laser hair removal, you should:
- Avoid direct sunlight from hitting your treated skin.
- Not use a tanning bed, sun lamp, or any other indoor tanning equipment.
- Follow your dermatologist’s after-care instructions.
You will see some redness and swelling after treatment. This often looks like a mild sunburn. Applying a cool compress can help reduce your discomfort.
