Mechanism of Action
Cosmetic fillers, or dermal fillers, work by adding volume beneath the skin to smooth out wrinkles, enhance facial features, and restore a youthful appearance.
Volume Restoration:
- Fillers are injected into the skin to restore lost volume and plump up areas that have thinned due to aging, such as the cheeks, lips, and around the mouth.
- They provide immediate volume and lift to the skin, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
Collagen Stimulation:
- Some fillers, like Poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) and Calcium Hydroxylapatite (Radiesse), stimulate the body’s natural collagen production.
- Increased collagen production helps to improve skin texture and elasticity over time, providing longer-lasting results.
Hydration and Elasticity:
- Hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm, Restylane) attract and retain water molecules, which helps keep the skin hydrated and adds to its plumpness and firmness.
Various Treatments
- Wrinkle Reduction: Fillers can smooth out fine lines, crow’s feet, and deeper wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
- Lip Enhancement: Adding volume, improving shape, and enhancing the definition of the lips.
- Cheek Augmentation: Enhancing the volume and contour of the cheeks for a more youthful appearance.
- Chin and Jawline Contouring: Improving the definition and contour of the chin and jawline.

- The patient’s medical history and any allergies or previous reactions to fillers are also reviewed.
Preparation:
- The treatment area is cleaned, and a topical or local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort.
- The practitioner marks the areas where the filler will be injected.
Injection:
- Using fine needles or cannulas, the practitioner injects the filler into the targeted areas beneath the skin.
- The depth and amount of filler used depend on the desired outcome and the type of filler.
- The practitioner may massage the area gently to ensure even distribution and to shape the filler as needed.
Post-Treatment Care:
- After the injections, patients might experience mild swelling, redness, and bruising, which usually subside within a few days.
- Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities, excessive sun or heat exposure, and alcohol for at least 24-48 hours post-treatment.

Restylane Fillers
Frequently Asked Questions
Cosmetic fillers, also known as dermal fillers, are injectable substances used to restore facial volume, smooth out wrinkles, and enhance facial contours. They are commonly used to treat areas such as the cheeks, lips, and around the eyes.
There are several types of cosmetic fillers, including:
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: Brands like Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero.
- Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) Fillers: Radiesse.
- Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA) Fillers: Sculptra.
- Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) Fillers: Bellafill.
- Autologous Fat Injections: Using the patient’s own fat
Fillers add volume beneath the skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles, enhance facial contours, and restore a youthful appearance. Some fillers also stimulate collagen production for longer-lasting results.
- You must be consulted by one of our cosmetic nurses at least 48 hours before the treatment.
- You should avoid eating fish oils, Ibuprofen, Aspirin (Sedatives), Treo or drinking alcohol before treatment as it increases the risk of bruising.
- Take a bath from the morning, put your hair up if it is long and come without make-up.
Common areas treated with fillers include:
- Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
- Marionette lines (lines from the mouth to the chin)
- Lips
- Cheeks
- Under-eye hollows
- Jawline
- Chin
Before the injection treatment, we apply a local anaesthetic cream on sensitive areas such as the lips. In the Restylane product itself, local anaesthetic in the form of lidocaine has been added, which also helps to reduce pain and discomfort. If you are worried about the pain, remember to tell your doctor before the treatment so that it can be taken into account.
As a rule, you only notice a few short-lived dots. Both before and after Restylane treatment, it is important that you put ice on the area to minimise discomfort and to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.
